Coaching and Coding Your MI Skills

What does it take to reach proficiency in MI?

Where “competency” in Motivational Interviewing (MI) refers to demonstrating MI skills in simulated exercises during workshops and consultations, MI “proficiency” refers to demonstrating fidelity to MI skills in real life (Frey et al., 2022). It is MI proficiency that is associated with real client impact and improved outcomes including client retention, engagement, and behavior change. It’s how we know we’re actually practicing MI effectively.

To help learners reach proficiency in Motivational Interviewing, we offer the following one-on-one opportunities for fidelity evaluation and skills coaching:

  • Coding with the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Coding Manual 4.2.1 (“the MITI”) measures a helper’s proficiency in the application of the technique. This model is the platinum standard in evaluating MI fidelity.

The learner submits a 20 minute (or longer) audio recording of themselves practicing MI; we code the submission using the MITI; and finally, we provide a detailed coding summary and a 1:1 skills coaching session to help learners improve and finesse their MI skills.

  • After your practice recording is submitted and coded for MI fidelity, we provide one-on-one skills coaching in a style consistent with MI; it is a helping partnership. Coaching sessions are between 20-30 minutes in duration.

We approach MI skills Coaching conversations with three initial questions in mind:

    1. What do you feel went well in your recording?

    2. What would you like to work on to increase your proficiency? and

    3. How would you like us to work together to achieve these goals in our time together?

  • Please use our MI Recording Submission Form. Once your recording is uploaded and payment for services confirmed, your Coach will code it within a two week period. You will receive an acknowledgment email to verify that the submission was successful and follow-up to schedule feedback and coaching.
